Miller wins giant slalom
Bode Miller
Miller was able to overturn a first-run deficit
Bode Miller has won the men's giant slalom at the ski world championships in St Moritz.

The American produced a stirring second run to overturn a deficit and earn his second gold medal of the week.

His winning time of two minutes 45.93 seconds came thanks to a trademark charge in the final of two attempts at a tricky circuit.

Austrian Hans Knauss, who had led after the first run, finished second in 2:45.96 and Erik Schlopy, of the USA, was third.

Schlopy sprang the big surprise of the day, bouncing back from 23rd spot to win bronze in a time of 2:45.97, as favourites Stephan Eberharter and Kjetil Andre Aamodt missed out.

"I was quite motivated at the start," Schlopy said afterwards.

"After the bad first run there was only one slogan - speed up."

Miller, meanwhile, was delighted to be joined on the podium by a compatriot.

"To be on the podium with an American next to me is the greatest joy," said Miller who has now won three medals at this championships.

British hope Alain Baxter had a disappointing first run, but improved slightly to finish 26th in a time of 2:49.61.
