Part shocks Taylor
John Part
Part kept his cool superbly to win the title
Canada's John Part caused a huge shock with a thrilling 7-6 victory over 10-times champion Phil Taylor to take the PDC World Darts Championship.

Part was thrashed 7-0 by Taylor in the 2001 final, but it was a different story this time around.

The Canadian, who won the 1994 Embassy World Championship, kept his nerve in a thrilling deciding set to claim his second world title.

Part had raced into a 4-1 lead before Taylor pegged him back.

The Canadian set out his stall early, winning the first leg with a superb 121 checkout before doubling his advantage with a shot at double four.

Taylor was unable to respond and Part nailed double 20 to take the crucial opening set.

The reigning champion missed double seven to square the match and his opponent capitalised to go two up, before hitting double 10 to take a 3-0 lead.

Taylor pulled a set back, thanks to a 122 finish in the second leg but Part then made it 4-1.

But from then on Taylor took control, winning the next four sets with some inspired darts as the form that seemed to desert him at the start of the match returned.

Checkouts of 82 and 109 helped and a double 16 gave him his ninth successive leg to level the final at 4-4.

Taylor took the lead for the first time by taking the ninth set with a 167 checkout.

Just when it looked like Taylor would take control of the match, Part recovered superbly to level again.

Both players squandered good opportunities in the first leg of the 11th set but it was Part who held his nerve under intense pressure to finish with 61 and move within one set of victory.

However, Taylor refused to crumble under the pressure and levelled it at 6-6 in sets when he found double 10 with his second attempt.

But at the end, it was the Canadian who proved the stronger to emerge victorious.
