Cuche takes super-G
Stephan Eberharter did not have it all his own way in Beaver Creek, Colorado. The overall leader of the World Cup, with four wins so far this season, failed to add to Saturday's downhill win in Sunday's super-G at the American resort. Swiss veteran Didier Cuche put in a stunning second half of the run to edge out Liechtenstein's Marco Buechel and Austria's Hannes Trinkl. Eberharter appeared to be taking it easy by his standards, and finished well down the field in 15th. A day earlier he had notched up his second downhill win of the season. The Austrian was fastest in the final training run which meant he had a start bib of 30th in Colorado. The current overall World Cup champion easily carved through the early leaders to win by 0.10 of a second. His Austrian compatriot Michael Walchhofer was second with American Daron Rahlves, being cheered on by the partisan home crowd, putting in a great run to finish third from a start bib of 37. Eberharter, now 33-years-old, has already won three other World Cup races this season. Britain's Finlay Mickel finished 55th out of the 64 starters, 4.67 seconds off the pace. Sunday's super-G result:
1. Didier Cuche (Switzerland) one minute 18.83 seconds Saturday's downhill result:
1. Stephan Eberharter (Austria) one minute 40.18 seconds |
