Ahearne Trophy wide open
Ian McIntyre wrapped up victory for the Knights
By BBC Sport Online's Stuart Hughes
Britain recorded its first win in normal time in the Ryder Cup-style Ahearne Trophy tournament on Thursday evening. London Knights beat Hannover Scorpions 3-1 at Docklands Arena, but defeat for Nottingham Panthers means Germany still leads by two points. The Scorpions, beaten 4-3 in overtime by Belfast Giants on Wednesday, took the lead in the seventh minute through Swedish forward Patrik Zetterberg. Nate Leslie and Rich Bronilla went close for London in the opening 20 minutes, but it was in the middle period that the Knights increased the tempo, out-shooting Hannover 17-5. Powerplay goal Pre-transfer deadline signing Greg Burke equalised at 26:51, slipping the puck under goalie Bjorn Leonhardt. New London back-up netminder Scott Bailey made his home debut just after the halfway mark, replacing Dave Trofimenkoff. Dominic Amodeo put London ahead on the powerplay at 45:35 with his first Superleague goal. The Scorpions removed their goalie with a minute remaining but Ian McIntyre carried the puck down the right wing and shot into the empty net. Gained momentum Nottingham Panthers, though, were unable to match London's success. They were beaten 2-1 by Iserlohn Roosters. Panthers fired off a series of decent shots on goal early on. Iserlohn gained momentum as the first period progressed and at 10:35 Rusty Fitzgerald poked home a rebound. Fitzgerald fired the puck into the roof of the net for his second at 25:48. Steve Moria narrowed the gap in the 28th minute, but Nottingham were unable to draw level.
