Germans take early lead
Revier Lowen Oberhausen were too strong for Belfast
By BBC Sport Online's Stuart Hughes
Germany has the edge after the first two games in the Ryder Cup-style Ahearne Trophy tournament between teams from the Superleague and the DEL. ISL champions Belfast Giants were brought down a notch by Revier Lowen Oberhausen. The German side beat the Northern Ireland franchise 4-3 in overtime. Belfast came from behind twice in the first period. Jason Bowen cancelled out a fourth-minute goal by Finn Mika Arvaja. Twelve minutes in, Belfast's other Bowen - former Manchester Storm forward Curt - restored parity after Jergus Baka's strike at 7:53. Christian Kohmann put the visitors back in front ten minutes into the final period. Three minutes later Rob Stewart took advantage of a Belfast powerplay to send the game into overtime. Ladislav Karabin struck 42 seconds into the extra session to give Germany their first win of the competition. Overtime pressure Manchester Storm were held to a 1-1 tie by Iserlohn Roosters at the MEN Arena. The Superleague team took the lead at 25:09 when Joe Busillo fed the puck to an unmarked Ivan Matulik. Roosters turned up the heat in the final period. The German outfit pulled their goalie in the dying minutes and bagged a late equaliser through Canadian Steve Washburn. Iserlohn pressed for the game winner during overtime but Manchester held out for a point. In the Superleague, Sheffield Steelers won their final home league game of the season, beating Bracknell Bees 4-3. Brent Bobyck broke the deadlock at 49:56 with a shot from the right wing to extend Bracknell's winless streak to 12 games.
