![]() Cyclist comes clean in drug trial
Drugs continue to plague the sport
Filippo Simeoni has broken the code of silence among cyclists in Italy by testifying to taking banned substances prescribed by a controversial doctor. Dr Michele Ferrari has denied administering banned products to riders. But Simeoni, who is this season riding for the Acqua e Sapone team, told the court he was given the blood booster EPO and Andriol (testosterone) by the doctor.
He told the court: "The doctor built me a work programme with growing levels."
"Dr Ferrari told me to be careful not to take testosterone too near races because I might then test positive." Simeoni added afterwards: "When you decide to take a certain path you are going to create a feeling of antipathy towards yourself." Another cyclist, the retired Fabrizio Convalle, has already testified indicating that Ferrari had given him 30 phials to put in his fridge. The case continues on 19 February when cyclist Gianluca Bortolami is expected to testify.
