Racewatch: Breeders' Cup
All the action as it happened from the big race meeting at Belmont Park, New York (All times BST, British starting prices).
2235 Breeders' Cup Classic, 1m 2f (Dirt) Tiznow became the first horse to win the Classic for the second year running as he got the verdict in a dramatic photo-finish with Sakhee. The four-year-old American horse just edged out a brave effort from Sakhee, the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner ridden by Frankie Dettori. Irish horse Galileo failed to keep up with the pace as the two main contenders did battle going to the line. Chris McCarron rode the winner, who had been written off by some pundits beforehand after an apparent loss of form. 1 Tiznow 8-1; 2 Sakhee 5-2 jf; 3 Albert the Great 14-1
2155 Breeders' Cup Turf, 1m4f (Turf) Frankie Dettori rode Godolphin's Fantastic Light to a thrilling success from the fast-finishing Milan. The decision to run the five-year-old Fantastic Light in this race, rather than the Classic, raised eyebrows. But Dettori had his mount well placed and sent him to the front, although he had to see off Mick Kinane's Irish raider Milan.
1 Fantastic Light Evens fav; 2 Milan 11-2;
2120 Breeders' Cup Juvenile, 1m 1/2f (Dirt) Johannesburg gave Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien and jockey Mick Kinane their first Breeders' Cup win. The horse, owned by former British bookmaker Michael Tabor and Sue Magnier, came with a perfectly-timed challenge to secure first place. It was a seventh consecutive victory for the precocious Johnannesburg, who can now rightly be regarded as the best two-year-old horse in the world. American hope Officer was the odds-on favourite, but he he faded in the straight after duelling for the lead. 1 Johannesburg 6-1; 2 Repent 40-1; 3 Siphonic 8-1
2045 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf, 1m2f (Turf) French filly Banks Hill secured Europe's first win of the 2001 meeting with a mighty performance. Olivier Peslier sent the Andre Fabre-trained horse to the front some way out, and she cruised clear of her rivals. The horse, bred in Britain and owned by Khaled Abdulla, stuck to the rail and left the rest of the field trailing. 1 Banks Hill; 2 Spook Express; 3 Spring Oak
2010 Breeders' Cup Sprint, 6f (Dirt) Jerry Bailey won on Squirtle Squirt to break a Breeders' Cup duck for trainer Bobby Frankel.
The three-year-old colt came off the pace to grab the lead, and held on in a close finish to give Frankel his first success in 39 attempts. Xtra Heat set out at a furious speed, but was edged into second just ahead of Caller One. Irish hope Mozart was left at the rear from the start, and struggled for speed, finishing a disappointing 11th. 1 Squirtle Squirt 11-1; 2 Xtra Heat 12-1; 3 Caller One 11-2
1935 Breeders' Cup Mile, 1m (Turf) Val Royal set a new record time for the race as he swept to an impressive triumph. It was a first Breeders' Cup win for jockey Jose Valdivia, with Forbidden Apple taking the runners-up spot and Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien's Bach in third. But there was disappointment for Godolphin, with Frankie Dettori's well-fancied mount Noverre finishing out of the places. Val Royal is owned by NYPD Blue television show producer David Milch.
1 Val Royal 11-2; 2 Forbidden Apple 6-1;
1855 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Godolphin's American training wing claimed a 1-2 with Tempera, ridden by David Flores, taking the honours. Frankie Dettori steered Imperial Gesture into second, with Bella Bellucci back in third. Flores punched the air after crossing the finishing line, and was immediately congratulated by Dettori. The horses are trained in California by Eoin Harty for Sheikh Mohammed's Godolphin team.
1 Tempera 6-1; 2 Imperial Gesture 16-1;
1820 Breeders' Cup Distaff, 1m1f (dirt) Outsider Unbridled Elaine produced a thrilling late charge under Pat Day to snatch victory from Spain.
Last year's champion Spain led for much of the way, but was caught on the line. The win was overshadowed after the start was delayed when three-year-old filly Exogenous suffered a serious head injury in a freak accident and had to be withdrawn. Exogenous reared up while going onto the track, flipped over, hit her head on the ground and caught a hind leg in a gate. She was sedated and removed in a horse ambulance, but was later back on her feet. 1 Unbridled Elaine 20-1; 2 Spain 10-3; 3 Two Item Limit 25-1.
Pre-race news A special ceremony honoured New York police and firefighters. The meeting is the first major international sporting event to be held in the New York area since the terror attacks of 11 September. An international contingent of jockeys wearing colourful silks and caps bearing the letters NYPD and FDNY presented American flags to New York City police officers at Belmont Park.
