Former champion jockey Lester Piggott is preparing for a return to the saddle at the age of 66.

The retired rider, who won the Epsom Derby an unprecedented nine times, will compete in the 2001 Emirates Airline Legends Race at next month's Melbourne Cup meeting.

Piggott, who last year rode Bay Scenery to third place in the race, spearheads a list of four international retired jockeys that will compete in the eight-runner contest.

Geoff Lewis will also represent Britain, while New Zealand's Linda Jones and Hong Kong's Tony Cruz have also been confirmed.

Epsom Derby: 9
Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe: 3

Piggott clocked up a total of more than 5,000 winners in an astonishing career.

Lewis won Epsom's three big races, the Derby, Oaks and Coronation Cup, in the same week.

"It's pretty good company again this year," Piggott told the Victoria Racing Club website.

"But I've already started riding trackwork to boost my fitness so I reckon I'll have an edge on the others.

"Last year was great fun but it was just a warm-up!"

Victoria Racing Club Marketing Manager Scott Vickers-Willis hopes the Legends Race will become a regular highlight of the Melbourne Cup Carnival events calendar.

"It has been a real coup for the club to have attracted such well-known jockeys from around the world again," he said.

"Last year proved to be an enormous success and we're expecting this year to be even bigger."

The remaining four riders in the race, to be run at Flemington on Saturday 10 November, have yet to be confirmed.

It takes place four days after the Melbourne Cup, Australia's biggest horse race.
