Pantani in Spanish withdrawal
Marco Pantani
Pantani has not had the best of seasons
Italian cycling star Marco Pantani has dropped out of the Tour of Spain during the 11th stage.

The 1998 Tour de France champion was 117th in the overall standings and one hour six minutes and 39 seconds behind leader Spaniard Joseba Beloki.

Pantani found the going too difficult on the mountainous stage and withdrew from the event after 43km of Wednesday's leg.

The Italian has endured a miserable season missing out on the Tour de France and dropping out sick from the Giro d'Italia.
