Fantastic Light shocks Galileo
Galileo was unable to respond to Fantastic Light's burst
Fantastic Light has won the eagerly awaited rematch with Galileo in the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown.
Fantastic Light, ridden by Frankie Dettori and a 9-4 second favourite behind Galileo, won it by just a head in the 10-furlong clash. Ice Dancer made the pace and led for more than a mile. But it was only ever going to be a two horse race and so it proved as the favourites came to the front. Fantastic Light was the first to show, but when Galileo came to challenge it looked like the Aidan O'Brien colt would retain its unbeaten record. But Fantastic Light kicked again and Mick Kinane's mount was unable to respond. Galileo was a two length winner over Fantastic Light in the mile-and-a-half King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot in July. But the Goldophin horse carried 12lbs more than his Irish opponent on that occasion. The difference this time was just 7lbs. And the shorter distance also favoured Fantastic Light on this occasion. Going into the race Galileo had won all six races in his short career including the English and Irish derbies.
