Galileo heads Ascot showpiece
Galileo could be set to conquer the mile
Galileo is one of 45 entries for the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot on 29 September.
The Irish wonder horse won at the same course last month in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes. He also succeeded over the same mile-and-a-half trip in the Vodafone Derby and Irish Derby. But the colt is now challenging for the prestigious title of Europe's champion miler.
"The question on everyone's lips is sure to be whether Galileo will stamp himself as one of the truly great champions by adding the mile championship to his undisputed dominance in the middle-distance sphere," said Ascot clerk of the course Nick Cheyne. Competitive line-up Galileo will face tough challenges from French filly Banks Hill and Godolphin's Noverre. Both horses were hailed as the best miler in Europe after their respective victories in the Coronation Stakes and Sussex Stakes last time out. Galileo's trainer Aidan O'Brien has entered 18 horses in the race, including star sprinter Mozart and St James's Palace Stakes winner Black Minnaloushe. Other strong contenders include German raider Proudwings, fresh from her win in last month's Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket, and Bocelli from Singapore. The Queen Elizabeth is the feature event at Ascot's three-day meeting which takes place on 28-30 September.
