Canseco hit two homers and drove in five runs, passing Johnny Bench for 57th place all-time. In Boston, Hideo Nomo lost for the first time this season at Fenway Park as the Red Sox suffered their second straight loss to the Anaheim Angels, beaten 4-2. In Baltimore, Jerry Hairston's two-run homer off closer Esteban Yan in the bottom of the ninth lifted the Orioles to a 6-5 triumph over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. In Toronto, Roy Halladay picked up his first win in more than a year and Carlos Delgado belted his 29th home run as the Blue Jays defeated the Minnesota Twins 3-1. National League Luis Gonzalez's 42nd homer of the season proved in vain for Arizona as the Montreal Expos recorded an 8-5 National League victory over the Diamondbacks. Gonzalez, who had his first four-hit game of the season, belted a two-out homer in the first and now leads the major leagues with 103 RBI. He trails Barry Bonds by four homers after the San Francisco Giants slugger produced a solo blast in his team's 3-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. In Houston, Tsuyoshi Shinjo sparked a six-run rally with a nine-pitch at-bat and Edgardo Alfonzo put away the game with a three-run homer in the 10th as the New York Mets defeated the Astros 8-2. In Milwaukee, Derrek Lee sparked a three-run rally in the ninth and then doubled home the go-ahead run in the 10th as the Florida Marlins posted a dramatic 5-4 win over the Brewers. In San Diego, Tony Gwynn sparked a seventh-inning rally with an RBI double and the Padres capitalized on an error by Eric Young to post a 4-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs. In Denver, the Philadelphia Phillies received a strong effort from starter Randy Wolf en route to an 8-1 rout of the Colorado Rockies in a game halted by rain in the top of the seventh. In Los Angeles, Todd Walker and Dmitri Young had three hits and three RBI apiece as the Cincinnati Reds pounded out 20 hits and matched their season-high five-game winning streak with a 10-5 triumph over the Dodgers. |
