Eric Chavez's three-run homer capped an eight-run third inning as the Oakland Athletics rounded off a productive month with an 11-2 rout of the Cleveland Indians.

The Indians failed to acquire a veteran pitcher on the trading deadline and trotted out rookie right-hander Jake Westbrook (3-3), who was torched for eight runs in 2 1/3 innings.

In New York, Rafael Palmeiro led off the fifth with an upper deck home run and Alex Rodriguez and Ivan Rodriguez belted solo shots in the seventh for the Texas Rangers.

The Rangers halted the Yankees' eight-game winning streak with a 6-2 victory.

Anaheim Angels' Troy Glaus

In Toronto, two base errors by Brian Buchanan and Doug Mientkiewicz on the same play allowed Brad Fullmer to circle the bases with the go-ahead run in the seventh for the Blue Jays.

Toronto won 3-1 as Minnesota lost for the 13th time in 16 games.

In Detroit, Jose Lima combined with Matt Anderson on a six-hitter to remain unbeaten at Comerica Park.

Bobby Higginson tripled in a run and scored as the Tigers beat the Seattle Mariners 4-2.

In Boston, Troy Glaus belted a long two-run homer off Rich Garces with one out in the top of the eighth as the Anaheim Angels held on for a 4-3 victory over the Red Sox.

In Baltimore, Paul Wilson won his second straight start since returning to the rotation and Ben Grieve had two hits and two RBI as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays held off the Orioles 5-4.

In Chicago, Brent Mayne's two-out single in the top of the 10th inning plated pinch runner Donnie Sadler and lifted the Kansas City Royals to a 2-1 victory over the White Sox.

National League

Mark McGwire is just one run off Harmon Killebrew in fifth place in the all-time home run list after belting his 572nd as the Cardinals beat the Atlanta Braves 6-2, in St Louis.

In Phoenix, Arizona's Curt Schilling became the first National League pitcher to reach 15 wins this season.

The Diamondbacks halted a four-game losing streak with a 3-1 win over the Montreal Expos.

In Denver, Rheal Cormier gave up a solo homer to Todd Helton with one out in the bottom of the ninth as the Philadelphia Phillies lost 7-6 to the Colorado Rockies.

Second baseman Craig Biggio hit his 16th home run of the season to clinch a 10th inning, 3-2 victory for the Houston Astros against the New York Mets, in Houston.

In Milwaukee, Ryan Dempster had a three-hitter as the Florida Marlins stopped a four-game losing streak with a 5-1 victory over the Brewers.

In San Diego, Jon Lieber increased his career-high win total to 14 games as Michael Tucker's solo homer broke a sixth-inning tie to hand the Chicago Cubs a 7-3 triumph over the Padres.

In Los Angeles, Ruben Rivera's hit put the Cincinnati Reds in front at the top of the 11th.
