Roger Clemens inspired the New York Yankees to a comprehensive 12-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League on Saturday night. The Yankees extended their winning record to seven matches thanks to three RBIs from Bernie Williams and Shane Spencer. The Seattle Mariners registered their third successive victory with a 5-1 win over the Minnesota Twins - with pitcher Ichiro Suzuki leading the way. The Japanese star was in dominant form, conceding a single in the first inning, a double in the third and a two-run single in the fourth. In a tense game in Boston, Mark Buehrle helped the Chicago White Sox to see off the Boston Red Sox 3-1. The consistent left-hand pitcher has allowed three runs or less in 13 of his last 14 starts and is fourth in the league in ERA. A fruitful six-run seventh inning eased the Kansas City Royals to a 9-3 victory over the Oakland Athletics.
The victory was a welcome boost for Kansas City, who have only won seven out of their last 24 games. American League batting leaders Roberto Alomar and Juan Gonzalez took charge as the Cleveland Indians saw off the Detroit Tigers for a 6-4 victory. But the Tigers earned revenge in the second game, ending a seven-match losing run with a 4-2 win. In their last five doubleheaders, Detroit have lost the first, but rallied and taken the win in the second. A home run from Shawn Wooten and a triple from rookie David Eckstein helped the Anaheim Angels to a 6-4 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. The Tampa Bay Devil Rays score four times in the 10th inning to triumph 7-3 over the Texas Rangers in Arlington. The scores were level 3-3 in the 10th, but the Devil Rays had the final say. |
