National League Milwaukee have ended the longest losing streak in the Major Leagues this season by beating the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-3. The victory, which halted an 11-game losing streak, came thanks to Jeromy Burnitz, who hit two home runs, and Mark Loretta, who hit the winning home run in the ninth off Matt Herges. Burnitz homered in the second for a 2-0 lead and tied it at 3-3 with his seventh-inning homer, both off Luke Prokopec. Andres Galarraga, making his San Francisco debut, went three-for-five with two runs batted in, as the Giants beat Colorado 9-3 in Denver to stop a four-game losing streak. In Atlanta, Kevin Millwood got his first win since 25 April and Paul Bako had a career-high four RBIs as the Braves crushed the Reds 11-3. In Philadelphia, Brian Hunter drove in three runs and Bobby Abreu had three hits as the Phillies beat the Expos 8-4. Philadelphia had 13 hits, giving the Phillies 27 in two games since manager Larry Bowa shook up his line-up. In Chicago, Jon Lieber (13-5) allowed two runs and seven hits in seven innings, setting his career high for wins, in the Cubs' 6-5 victory over Pittsburgh. In St Louis, Mark McGwire hit his 568th home run, five behind Harmon Killebrew for fifth place on the career list, and Dustin Hermanson (8-8) tied a career-high with nine strike-outs in the Cardinals' 10-2 romp against the Houston Astros. In Miami, Mike Piazza got three hits and the New York Mets overcame a team-record 16 runners left on base to beat the Florida Marlins 5-2. Luis Gonzalez hit his 41st home run and became the first player in the majors to top 100 RBIs as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the San Diego Padres 9-6 in Phoenix. American League The New York Yankees took their fourth straight win, with a 4-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers. That came thanks to Scott Brosius breaking an 0-for-14 losing run with a two-out, tie-breaking RBI single in the seventh inning. In Boston, Alex Gonzalez homered in the 10th inning off Derek Lowe (4-8) as Toronto beat the Red Sox 4-3. Jim Thome hit an American League-leading 32nd homer, his 11th during July, to help the Indians win 7-5 over Chicago White Sox in Cleveland. In Arlington, Texas, Justin Duchscherer won his major league debut, allowing four runs and eight hits in 6 2/3 innings as Texas beat Baltimore 6-5 in the first game of a doubleheader. The Rangers earned the sweep when Mike Lamb hit an RBI double and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Alex Rodriguez in a three-run eighth inning as Texas won the second game 5-2. Joe Mays dominated the Athletics' revamped line-up, as Minnesota halted their five-game losing streak with a 3-1 win in Oakland, California. In Anaheim, California, emergency starter Paul Wilson pitched five scoreless innings as Tampa Bay snatched a 3-1 win from the Angels. Neifi Perez doubled and scored in his Kansas City debut, and Paul Byrd pitched a shutout into the ninth inning as the Royals beat the Mariners 5-1 in Seattle. |
