National League Randy Johnson combined on a one-hitter against San Diego for the second time in six days as the Arizona Diamondbacks routed the Padres 11-0 in Phoenix. Johnson (13-5) allowed a first-inning single by Bubba Trammell and struck out 14 in seven innings. Luis Gonzalez homered twice to reach 40 and is just two homers behind San Francisco's Barry Bonds, the major league leader. Sammy Sosa homered, doubled and drove in five runs as the Cubs defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 10-2 at Chicago. In St Louis, Wade Miller (12-5) gave up two hits in eight innings - one of them Mark McGwire's 13th homer this season and 567th of his career as Houston beat the Cardinals 2-1.
In Atlanta, Aaron Boone and Jason LaRue each drove in three runs as Cincinnati scored a decisive 11-3 win over the Braves. In Milwaukee, Gary Sheffield and Shawn Green both hit home runs as Los Angeles won 7-2 to hand the Brewers their 11th consecutive defeat. Reliever Ricky Bones (3-3) struck out Mike Piazza with the bases loaded to protect a one-run lead in the fifth inning as the Marlins beat New York 4-3 in Miami. In Denver, Todd Helton homered and drove in two runs as Colorado capitalised on one error, two passed balls and one wild pitch to beat San Francisco 6-4.
American League Catcher Jorge Posada retrieved an errant pitch and threw out Roger Cedeno at the plate for the final out as the New York Yankees held on to beat the Detroit Tigers 6-5. Juan Enacarnacion hit an eighth-inning homer off Ramiro Mendoza that soared about 470 feet, believed to be the first ball hit into the left-centre field bleachers since Yankee Stadium was reconfigured in 1976. In Boston, David Cone (6-1) won his sixth straight game, allowing three runs and six hits in 6 1/3 innings, as the Red Sox downed Toronto 6-4. Sean Lowe (6-2) struck out a career-high eight in 7 2/3 innings for Chicago, allowing one run and six hits in their 4-1 defeat of the Indians in Cleveland. Pinch-hitter Randy Velarde delivered a tiebreaking RBI double in the eighth inning as Texas came from behind twice to beat Baltimore 8-7 in Arlington, Texas. In Seattle, Kris Wilson outpitched Freddy Garcia for the second time in five days as the Kansas City Royals halted the Seattle Mariners' four-game winning streak 6-1. In Anaheim, California, Jarrod Washburn struggled to win his eighth consecutive game as the Angels beat Tampa Bay 9-6 for their eighth victory in nine starts. In Oakland, Terrence Long doubled and scored on third baseman Corey Koskie's error in the ninth inning to help the Athletics win 7-6 and hand Minnesota their fifth straight loss. |
