National League Curt Schilling allowed one hit and struck out 12 in seven innings to power the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 9-2 win over the San Francisco Giants. The big right-hander struck out seven in a row from the fourth to the sixth innings to tie a team record, fanned every position player at least once and became Major League's first 14-game winner. Arizona remain one-and-half games ahead of second-place Los Angeles in the NL West. The Giants are now four-and-a-half games off the pace. Gary Sheffield hit the 300th and 301st homers of his career to power Los Angeles to a 22-7 rout of the Colorado Rockies. The 22 runs were the most scored by the Dodgers since Brooklyn beat Pittsburgh 23-6 on 10 July, 1943, at Ebbets Field. In Houston, Sammy Sosa belted two homers to reach yet another milestone and Eric Young and Delino DeShields drove in eighth-inning runs to lift the Chicago Cubs to their first victory over the Astros, 5-4. Sosa becomes just the eighth player in Major League history to record 50 career multi-homer games. Ken Griffey sparked a five-run rally with a lead-off triple in the eighth inning to lead the Cincinnati Reds to an 8-4 victory over the Florida Marlins in Miami. Griffey, who missed the first 49 games of the season with an injured hamstring, scored all three times he reached base to help Cincinnati snap a four-game slide and win for just the fifth time in 20 games. Rey Ordonez's lead-off blast sparked a three-run third and Steve Trachsel pitched seven strong innings in Philadelphia as the New York Mets held on for a 6-3 victory over the Phillies. Brian Tollberg won for the first time in more than two months as the San Diego Padres pounced on Mark Loretta's throwing error in the third for a 5-3 win over the Milwaukee Brewers, who have lost eight straight games.
American League The Anaheim Angels edged the Orioles 6-5 as baseball returned to Baltimore after a three-day break. Ben Molina's 10th-inning RBI single snapped a tie as the Angels survived a shaky outing from Troy Percival. The Orioles had been out of action following Wednesday's train derailment one mile north of Camden Yards. In Chicago, Paul Konerko hit his third career grand slam following Tomo Ohka's sixth walk of the game in a third-inning uprising as the White Sox coasted to a 10-3 rout of the Boston Red Sox. Ohka (2-5) slipped to 0-3 in four starts since being recalled from Class AAA Pawtucket and has not won since tossing seven scoreless innings at Tampa Bay on April 17. Charles Nagy recorded his 18th career win against the Detroit Tigers in Cleveland while Jolbert Cabrera and Omar Vizquel combined for six hits and four RBI for the Indians, who knotted the three-game series with an 8-4 victory. John Flaherty hit the go-ahead solo homer after Brent Abernathy's blast ended Darren Oliver's bid for a perfect game as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays posted a 2-1 victory over the Texas Rangers in Florida. Oliver had retired the first 16 batters before Abernathy sent the first pitch into the left-field stands with one out in the sixth. In New York, the Toronto Blue Jays came on strong in the ninth innings to hand the Yankees their fourth straight loss, 5-3. |
