National League Robert Person pitched a five-hitter and slammed his first career homer while Pat Burrell matched a career high with five RBI as the Philadelphia Phillies crushed the New York Mets 10-1. Person (8-5), a former Met, came within one out of his third career shutout before Todd Pratt homered. Burrell, benched earlier this week, belted a three-run homer in the first inning and added a two-run single in the second. In Denver, Brian Bohanon pitched seven strong innings and collected three hits as the Colorado Rockies returned home after a dreadful road trip to score an emphatic 11-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Rockies had won only once on an eight-game road trip but received a lift from Bohanon, who struck out four and issued just one walk in notching his first win since 17 June. Sterling Hitchcock tossed seven strong innings and was backed by a high-powered attack as the Padres overwhelmed the Milwaukee Brewers 11-2 in San Diego. Hitchcock (2-0), making his second start of the season, allowed two runs and nine hits. The veteran lefthander did not walk a batter and struck out seven. In San Francisco, Ramon Martinez's home run in the third inning led the Giants to a 1-0 victory over NL West leaders Arizona. Giants slugger Barry Bonds, this season's home run leader, went 0-for-2 with two walks to remain on the 42 mark.
American League Manny Ramirez homered twice and Jose Offerman hit a three-run shot as the Boston Red Sox regained a share of first place in the American League East with a 7-2 win over the Chicago White Sox. Ramirez put Boston ahead for good in the top of the first inning with a three-run blast off Rocky Biddle (2-6). After Offerman's fifth home run made it 6-0 in the second, Ramirez completed his fifth two-homer game of the season in the eighth. The Red Sox improved to 5-4 on an 11-game road trip and moved into a tie with the New York Yankees at the top of the AL East with identical 56-40 records. Aaron Sele ran his scoreless innings streak to 17 1/3 and All-Star Mike Cameron hit a two-run homer in Minneapolis as the Seattle Mariners posted a 4-0 triumph over the Minnesota Twins. In Kansas City, Eric Chavez hit two homers and tied a career high with six RBI and Jeremy Giambi continued his torrid hitting with three hits to lead the Oakland Athletics to a 14-3 rout of the struggling Royals. The A's pounded out 16 hits and fell two runs shy of their season high. Chavez led the assault with four hits and posted his second multi-homer game of the season. Esteban Loaiza went five innings for his first win in seven weeks and Jose Cruz Jr homered twice to lead the Toronto Blue Jays to a 10-4 victory at the New York Yankees. In Cleveland, Chris Holt surrendered two runs and five hits over 5 1/3 innings and six different players drove in runs, leading the Detroit Tigers to a 7-3 victory over the Indians. Coming off back-to-back routs of the New York Yankees at home, the Tigers won for only the seventh time in their last 24 road contests. |
