National League Randy Johnson struck out 16, a Major League record for a reliever, as Arizona beat San Diego 3-0 on Thursday in the completion of their suspended game. Johnson came within four outs of combining with Curt Schilling on a no-hitter. The game, in San Diego, was suspended in the third inning Wednesday after explosions knocked out a bank of lights over left field. Johnson (12-5) relieved Thursday and his strike-outs were one more than Washington's Walter Johnson pitched in the final 11 1/3 innings of a 15-inning game on 25 July, 1913. In the regular game, Kevin Jarvis (7-7) won his third straight start, Trevor Hoffman got his 21st save and Phil Nevin hit a two-run homer as the Padres had their revenge and beat Arizona 8-4. In Houston, Mark McGwire connected off Wade Miller (11-5) for a three-run homer, the 566th of his career as the Cardinals beat the Astros 4-1. In Cincinnati, John Burkett (7-7) gave up four hits in seven shutout innings, and Keith Lockhart and Dave Martinez hit solo homers off Jim Brower (4-7) as the Braves won 2-1 over the Reds. In Montreal, Lee Stevens and Orlando Cabrera hit RBI singles in a four-run eighth off Rheal Cormier (5-3) as the Expos rebounded to a 5-2 win against the Phillies after wasting a 1-0 lead in the top of the innings. In New York, Cliff Floyd and Derrek Lee homered as Florida ended the Mets' season-best five-game winning streak 8-3. In Los Angeles, pinch-hitter Jeff Reboulet's eighth-inning single off Ray King drove in the go-ahead run after Paul Lo Duca led off the inning against David Weathers (3-3) with his second double. Gary Sheffield homered twice for the Dodgers, who won 8-6 for their sixth straight. The Brewers have lost a season-high six in a row. In Pittsburgh, Tike Redman hit his second career homer in the seventh inning off Courtney Duncan (3-3) as Pittsburgh overcame a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2 over the Cubs and end a five-game losing streak. Jeff Kent worked out a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth to give San Francisco a 2-1 win over the Rockies in San Francisco. American League Jim Thome homered twice, doubled and drove in four runs Thursday, and Dave Burba won for the first time in 5 1/2 weeks as the Cleveland Indians beat the White Sox 10-3 in Chicago. Anaheim's Jarrod Washburn pitched through a bases-loaded jam in the sixth inning to win his seventh straight decision 2-1 over Tampa Bay at St. Petersburg, Florida. Raul Mondesi hit a game-winning single as the Blue Jays rallied for three runs with two outs in the ninth inning to beat the Boston Red Sox 4-3 in Toronto. In Detroit, Damion Easley hit a bases-loaded triple and drove in four runs and Jose Lima pitched his first complete game in more than two years as the Tigers thrashed the New York Yankees 11-2. Carlos Beltran tripled and hit one of Kansas City's five doubles, to lead the Royals past Freddy Garcia and the Seattle Mariners 6-3 in Kansas City, Missouri. In Minneapolis, Minnesota back-up Brian Buchanan was 4-for-5 with four RBIs, and Corey Koskie doubled twice and drove in three runs as a line-up filled with reserves beat Oakland 12-10. Texas Rangers versus Baltimore Orioles was postponed due to hazardous conditions. |
