Fred McGriff hit a crucial solo home run off Steve Karsay as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays recorded a 6-5 Interleague win over the Atlanta Braves on Monday. The slugging first baseman, who hit a pair of homers in Sunday's 9-1 win, refused to be traded to the Chicago Cubs as he expressed a desire to finish his career in his hometown of Tampa. Rookie Lance Davis stole the show in the first complete game of the season for the Cincinnati Reds. Ken Griffey Jr also enjoyed his 46th career multi-homer game as the Detroit Tigers were on the receiving end of a 9-1 rout. Late rally In Miami, Jesus Sanchez combined with three relievers on a two-hitter and Cliff Floyd and Alex Gonzalez drove in two runs apiece as the Florida Marlins posted a 4-0 triumph over the Baltimore Orioles. In Montreal, Brian Daubach's two-run homer prevented a tie in the top of the seventh inning as the Boston Red Sox rallied for a 6-5 victory over the Expos . Steve Trachsel allowed four hits over eight-plus scoreless innings for his first home win in nearly three months as the New York Mets kept the Toronto Blue Jays winless at Shea Stadium with a 3-0 victory. In St Louis, Albert Pujols prevented a tie with an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead the Cardinals to a 4-3 win over the Minnesota Twins. In Chicago, Raul Ibanez's pinch RBI grounder in the sixth inning avoided the game's final tie as the Kansas City Royals defeated the Cubs 4-2. In Houston, the Astros took advantage of another meltdown by John Rocker, scoring five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to rally for a 10-8 victory over the Cleveland Indians. In Milwaukee, the Chicago White Sox scored four times in the sixth inning to record a 6-5 triumph over the Brewers. In Philadelphia, the New York Yankees posted a 6-3 triumph over the Phillies. Nine days after authoring the only perfect game in the 99-year history of the Class AAA circuit, John Halama was hammered over three innings as Seattle suffered a 5-3 Interleague loss to Arizona. Arizona starter Miguel Batista did enough to post his first win as a starter in 14 months. Batista (5-5) allowed three runs and four hits in 5 1/3 innings in snapping a 13-start winless drought that dated back to 17 May, 2000. |
