Cal Ripken homered twice to standing ovation for the Baltimore Orioles in his last-ever regular season game at the Atlanta Braves' Turner Field. Ripken, who retires at the end of the season, extended his hitting streak to 15 games and combined with pitcher Willis Roberts (7-7) to ensure a 4-1 victory for the Orioles. In St Louis Mark McGwire hit a home run to move past former team-mate Reggie Jackson into sixth place on the all-time list. Matt Morris built on his All-Star appearance with 11 strikeouts as the Cardinals edged past the Detroit Tigers 3-2. The Seattle Mariners ensured their best-ever start, and the eighth best in major league history, by beating the San Francisco Giants 3-2. Japan's Ichiro Suzuki walked twice, stole a base, scored a run and drove in another with a sacrifice fly as Freddy Garcia (11-1) posted his fifth straight win. In Anaheim, California, Matt Williams and Steve Finley hit RBI doubles in the ninth inning and Jay Bell homered as Arizona rallied from a four-run deficit to beat the Angels 7-5. In Milwaukee, Ron Belliard gave Milwaukee the lead twice but Corey Koskie belted a two-run homer in the eighth inning to lift the red-hot Minnesota Twins to a 5-3 victory over the Brewers. The Los Angeles Dodgers ended their three-game slide with a 5-3, 15 innings win over the Oakland Athletics. Chad Kreuter and Paul Lo Duca walked with the bases loaded in the 15th inning to bring the A's five-game winning streak to an end. The Colorado Rockies crushed the Rangers 11-2 in Arlington, Texas, with Shawn Chacon revering from his worst outing in the majors by allowing two runs over eight-plus innings. In New York, the Mets handed manager Bobby Valentine the 1,000th win of his career with a 2-0 win over the Boston Red Sox. Glendon Rusch allowed a single hit in the first eight innings. In Chicago, Sean Lowe allowed three hits over seven innings and Carlos Lee homered and drove in two runs as the White Sox beat the crosstown Cubs 3-1. Ruben Rivera robbed Omar Vizquel of a homer in the ninth inning and delivered the winning sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 13th as the Cincinnati Reds snapped a five-game losing streak with a 6-5 victory over the Cleveland Indians. In Miami, pinch hitter Chuck Knoblauch singled home pinch runner Clay Bellinger in the top of the 10th as the Yankees posted a dramatic 5-4 victory over the Florida Marlins. In Montreal, Tony Armas Jr allowed one run and seven hits over 7 1/3 innings as the Montreal Expos routed the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 10-2. Alex Gonzalez knocked in two runs and Joey Hamilton pitched 5 1/3 effective innings as the Toronto Blue Jays posted a 4-2 victory over the Phillies in Philadelphia. In Pittsburgh, Carlos Beltran tied a career high with four RBI and Kris Wilson worked an effective 6 2/3 innings as the Kansas City Royals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-4.
National League Damian Jackson hit a broken-bat grand slam in the sixth inning as the San Diego Padres rallied from three runs down to beat the Houston Astros 8-6. Mark Kotsay continued to hit well against the Astros, going 2-for-5 with a two-run homer. He's 18-for-38 (.471) against Houston this season. |
