Archduke Ferdinand won an exciting Northumberland Plate at Newcastle on Saturday.

The 12-1 shot beat the heavily-backed Cover Up by a head.

Ridden by Francis Norton, Archduke Ferdinand took the lead in the final furlong and hung on from the advancing Cover Up.

The Sir Michael Stoute-trained Cover Up, ridden by Kieren Fallon, had been backed down from 7-1 to 3-1 but it was the outsider which took the honours.

Kevin Darley was aiming to win the race, the richest two-mile flat race in Europe, for the third time in a row.

But Bay of Islands finished a disappointing eighth.

A total of 18 horses lined up for the race, after Yorkshire and Order were withdrawn earlier in the day.

A delighted Norton said afterwards: "We were able to get prime position on the rail.

"I could hear Kieren coming up behind me. I screamed at my horse and he kept going to the winning post."

1. Archduke Ferdinand 12-1; 2. Cover Up 3-1 fav; 3. Heros Fatal 12-1; 4th Ravenswood 20-1.
