Olympian Cooper dies
![]() Cooper celebrates his gold medal at the Seoul Olympics
Britain's double Olympic shooting champion Malcolm Cooper has died from cancer aged 54.
Cooper was diagnosed with the illness in October last year and passed away at his home in Eastergate, Sussex, on Saturday. After beginning his career in New Zealand where his father was stationed with the Royal Navy, Cooper progressed to Olympic proficiency with the small bore rifle. He claimed the gold medal at the Los Angeles Games in 1984 and repeated his triumph in Seoul four years later - the only man to successfully defend the title. An MBE recipient, Cooper established himself as one of the world's top marksmen. He claimed all five individual titles at the 1985 European championships and setting five world records at the world championships the following year. He leaves behind his wife, Sarah, with whom he won team gold at the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh.
