BBC Sport Online's Steve Cresswell looks back at the major action from last year's Royal Ascot meeting.

Aidan O'Brien's Giant's Causeway justified his 7-2 favourite status to win the St James' Palace Stakes on the opening day of last year's Royal Ascot meeting.

The horse and jockey Mick Kinane had finished second in both the 2,000 Guineas and the Irish Guineas, but they went one better to hold of the challenges of Valentino and Medicean.

The Godolphin horse Bachir led for most of the race but finished out of the placings.

Day two belonged to Dubai Millennium but also witnessed a nasty fall for Kieren Fallon that would relegate the former champion jockey to a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Fallon was aboard Beat All in the Prince of Wales' Stakes but though his charge finished third he was a long way behind Dubai Millennium.

The Godolphin horse won by eight lengths after storming through the final furlong, with the German trained Sumitas in second.

American jockey Jerry Bailey rode Dubai Millennium due to the continued absence of Frankie Dettori, still recovering from injuries sustained in a plane crash at Newmarket.

The day ended on a sour note though as Fallon was taken to hospital with a serious shoulder injury after falling from his horse Alhawa in the final race of the day, the Ascot Handicap.

The Irishman damaged nerves and ligaments and had to undergo a five-hour operation.

But with four winners already to his name at the Royal meeting Fallon clinched the top jockey trophy.

Racing took centre stage once again on day three as Godolphin claimed a nail-biting victory in the Gold Cup with Kayf Tara.

Pre-race favourite Kayf Tara left his challenge late, but came through to win by a head from Far Cry with Compton Ace coming in third

But Michael Kinane's winner had to survive a 15 minutes stewards' inquiry after video evidence appeared to show the jockey and horse apparently interfering with the rest of the pack.

But the stewards saw no reason to change the result.

And so to the final Group One race of the week, Friday's Coronation Stakes and that saw a convincing victory for Clive Brittain's Crimplene.

With the German and Irish Guineas already behind her, Crimplene stormed to victory by two-and-a-half lengths from Princess Ellen.

Phillip Robinson's ride handed Brittain his first Royal Ascot victory since 1996.
