Denis Zanette won the 10th stage of the Giro d'Italia, ending a six-year drought without success in the event.

Zanette's fellow Italian Mario Manzoni was second, with Isidro Nozal of Spain finishing third.

Dario Frigo retained the pink jersey as the overall leader after finishing the stage 10 minutes behind Zanette.

In the overall standings, Frigo has a three-second lead over Portugal's Jose Azevedo, and a 14-second advantage over third placed Spanard Abraham Olano.

But the day belonged to Zanette, who captured only his second stage victory at the Giro, after breaking away from a small group five kilometers (3.1 miles) from the finish.

"I hope I do not have to wait another six years for my next victory," said the Liquigas rider.

Zanette completed the 212km stage in a time of five hours 16 minutes and 21 seconds.

Frigo had a relatively quiet day but was looking forward to the demanding mountainous stages which begin on Friday.

"I want to keep the pink jersey as long as possible. But the real Giro begins this weekend," said Frigo.

The 137 kilometers 11th stage (84.9 miles), runs from the Slovenian town of Bled to Gorizia, in north-east Italy and will take place on Wednesday.
