American League Roger Clemens moved into fifth place on the all-time strikeout list after in a 12-5 win for the New York Yankees against the Cleveland Indians on Saturday. It was not a typical outing for the fierce pitcher, who allowed five runs and eight hits over seven innings, surrendering home runs to Jacob Cruz, Ellis Burks and Russell Branyan. But when Clemens struck out Cruz with a curveball in the seventh inning, it was the 3,575th of his career and he surpassed Don Sutton on the all-time list. His next legendary target is Tom Seaver, who is only 65 strikeouts away. Chuck Knoblauch had three hits, four RBI, two stolen bases and scored four times to help the Yankees batting effort. In Minneapolis, the Oakland Athletics and Minnesota Twins played an epic double-header in old-fashioned uniforms.
The Athletics posted a 5-4 victory in the first game, after LaTroy Hawkins' wild pitch allowed Frank Menechino to score the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th innings. But in game two, Torii Hunter exacted revenge for the Twins, homering twice and driving in the winning run to rally his team to a 7-6 victory. Elsewehere, Chris Michalak pitched eight shutout innings as the Toronto Blue Jays routed the Red Sox 5-0 in Boston. It was the first time the Red Sox failed to score since last September against Baltimore. In Kansas City, Aaron Sele allowed two runs in seven innings and Bret Boone, Carlos Guillen and Dan Wilson drove in two runs each as the Seattle Mariners cruised to a 7-2 triumph over the Royals. Since 1998, only Boston's Pedro Martinez (66) has more wins than Sele (61). National League Curt Shilling became the major league's first pitcher to win eight games, as the Arizona Diamondbacks edged past the San Diego Padres. But, en route to a 3-1 win for his team, Schilling came within five outs of the 15th perfect game in modern history. He was perfect through seven innings and got Phil Nevin out to open the eighth, before Ben Davis - a catcher with average speed - laid down a bunt to reach first base. In New York, Preston Wilson had four hits, homered twice and drove in three runs to power the Florida Marlins to a 7-3 win over the Mets. Wilson hit solo homers off Glendon Rusch in the third and Donne Wall in the seventh and narrowly missed a third homer when he belted a run-scoring double off the center-field wall in the eighth. The Cincinnati Reds took advantage of seven strong innings thrown by Elmer Dessens to see off the St Louis Cardinals 7-2. It was their first win in Cincinnati for two weeks and marginally improved their National League-worst record to 7-17 at home. |
