Jason Varitek hit three home runs to lead the Boston Red Sox to a 10-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday. Varitek smashed a solo shot in the second inning off Brian Meadows a three-run homer in the fourth and a two-run drive in the eighth against Mac Suzuki. Manny Ramirez hit his 15th homer while Carl Everett homered in the ninth. Frank Castillo (5-2) allowed one run and six hits in six innings. In Arlington, Texas, Pat Mahomes won as a starter for the first time in 17 appearances since 1994, allowing two runs and six hits in five innings as the Rangers beat the Blue Jays 3-2. Juan Moreno, Mark Petkovsek, Mike Venafro and Jeff Zimmerman combined on three-hit relief, with Zimmerman getting four outs for his fourth save in five chances. Chris Michalak (4-3) gave up three runs and seven hits in five innings and Randy Velarde, moved up from the No. 2 slot in the order in place of regular lead-off man Rusty Greer, singled in his first three at-bats. Greg Vaughn homered twice and Fred McGriff went 3-for-5 and drove in three runs as Tampa Bay Devil Rays stopped a five-game losing streak, beating the Tigers 10-2. Vaughn, who had a pair of solo shots, has three homers in two games and 11 this season. Brady Anderson scored the winning run for the Baltimore Orioles in the ninth on Fernando Lunar's sacrifice fly to second baseman Luis Rivas, easily beating the off-balance throw from the outfield grass to sink the Twins. In Oakland, California, Frank Menechino hit a three-run double off Keith Foulke in a six-run eighth as Oakland rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win its sixth straight. Tim Hudson (4-3) allowed two runs and four hits in eight innings and Jeff Tam pitched a one-hit ninth, sending Chicago to its sixth straight loss. White Sox starter Mark Buehrle retired the first 16 batters before Adam Piatt's double to shallow right in the sixth. Bobby Howry (2-2) gave up an RBI single to Piatt in the eighth.
