Menechino shines for Oakland

American League New York Yankees lost their third straight game - all in extra innings - 4-3 against Oakland Athletics on Frank Menechino's single in the 10th. Menechino, who had homered earlier, hit a one-out drive over left fielder David Justice's head to win the game. Ichiro Suzuki extended his hitting streak to 21 games as Seattle Mariners beat Chicago White Sox 7-2 for its seventh straight victory. Paul Abbott struck out 10 and Carlos Guillen drove in three runs for the host Mariners, who lead the majors with a 30-9 record. Cleveland Indians claimed its 11th straight road victory in a 4-3 win over Texas Rangers. Alex Rodriguez homered, tripled, doubled and scored three runs, but Texas still lost for the 14th time in 16 games. LaTroy Hawkins earned his 13th save in 14 chances for Minnesota Twins as they beat Boston Red Sox 4-3. In other games, Anaheim Angels downed Toronto Blue Jays 3-1, Baltimore Orioles defeated Detroit Tigers 3-2 and Kansas City Royals beat Tampa Bay Devil Rays 9-5. National League Sammy Sosa may have got his 400th homer, but the Houston Astros still ended up with another victory - a 6-2 win over the Chicago Cubs. Ex-Cub Orlando Merced's tie-breaking home run in the seventh inning sent the Astros to their fourth straight win and 10th in 13 games. Chipper Jones hit a tie-breaking two-run homer off John Wasdin in the eighth inning as Atlanta Braves overcame a four-run deficit to beat Colrado Rockies. Darryl Kile pitched a seven-hit shutout against Pittsburgh Pirates, the NL's worst-hitting team, and St. Louis Cardinals won its ninth straight game 3-0. Tony Fernandez and Ron Belliard hit solo homers off Bruce Chen as the Milwaukee Brewers won their fifth successive game, beating Philadelphia Phillies. Rickey Henderson extended a major league record with his 79th homer leading off a first inning as San Diego defeated New York Mets 5-2. Arizona Diamondbacks beat Cincinnati Reds 2-1, Florida Marlins defeated San Francisco Giants 4-3 and Los Angeles Dodgers overcame Montreal Expos 7-2. |
