American League Doug Mientkiewicz was on hand with four hits as the Minnesota Twins held on for a 4-2 victory over the New York Yankees. As well as taking his hit streak to a career-high 15 games in his first at-bat, Mientkiewicz was able to give the Twins a 4-1 lead with a two-run single. But the game was marred by fans located behind the left-field fence, who decided to throw debris at Yankees left fielder and long-time Twin Chuck Knoblauch. The disruption forced the game to be delayed and Twins manager Tom Kelly walked out to left field to chastise the fans. However, Minnesota went on to snatch victory with Joe Mays (4-1) giving up one run and four hits while striking out four in six innings. Elsewhere, Ben Grieve had four hits and five RBI while Ryan Rupe and Tanyon Sturtze combined on a six-hitter to give the Tampa Bay Devil Rays a 7-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. In Arlington, the Detroit Tigers stole two bases and took advantage of an error by catcher Doug Mirabelli to hand the Texas Rangers their fourth straight loss, 8-4. The Cleveland Indians beat the Kansas City Royals 8-4 with Marty Cordova hitting a three-run homer for the second straight night. Aaron Sele became the second pitcher to win five games this season as he handed the Seattle Mariners a 5-1 victory over the Boston Red Sox. Edgar Martinez was another hero of the day for Seattle after driving in their first three runs. The Oakland Athletics limited the Toronto Blue Jays to just three hits as they secured only their second home win of the season, blanking the visitors 6-0. Finally in the American League, the Anaheim Angels crushed the Chicago White Sox 12-5. National League Greg Maddux put on a star performance in his 100th career game, striking out 14 batters and allowing just two hits in the Atlanta Braves' 1-0 win over the Milwaukee Brewers. The only run of the game was a single homer in the second inning by BJ Surhoff. The only hits Maddux surrendered were a double by Devon White in the fourth and a single by Jose Hernandez in the fifth. Elsewhere, Kevin Brown earned his fourth consecutive win and hit one of his team's five home runs as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Cincinnati Reds 7-3.
The Montreal Expos edged the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-3 as starting pitcher Tony Armas threw six scoreless innings and highlighted a three-run fourth inning with a two-run single. Armando Rios blasted a three-run homer in the top of the sixth inning as the San Francisco Giants recorded a 7-6 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Sammy Sosa hit one of four homers by the Chicago Cubs in their 8-3 victory over the San Diego Padres. Ray Lankford belted a two-run homer with one out in the 11th inning to lift the St Louis Cardinals to a 4-2 victory over the Florida Marlins. Finally, it was a tense match-up in the Houston Astros' visit to the New York Mets stadium, but they managed to edge a 6-5 victory. |
