National League Deion Sanders marked his return to baseball, after a three-year absence, with a great performance to help the Cincinnati Reds to a 7-6 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Sanders, who is also an All-Pro cornerback for the NFL's Washington Redskins, got three hits, including a three-run homer, to take the Reds to a 6-1 lead before the Dodgers produced an amazing comeback to tie the game. But Dmitri Young's RBI single in the seventh finally finished off the visitors' revival. It was Sanders' first appearance in the majors since 4 September 1997. Elsewhere, the New York Mets' 7-5 victory over the Houston Astros was marked by Robin Ventura's 15th career grand slam, which moves him to ninth on the all-time list. Mike Piazza added a two-run shot as New York posted consecutive wins for just the third time this season.
Daal turned in his longest outing of the season, going eight innings and allowing one run and four hits. Jeff Kent led the way in the San Francisco Giants' 11-6 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates with a three-run homer in the third inning, a three-run double in the fourth and seven RBI to tie his career high. Curt Schilling pitched seven strong innings and Matt Williams hit a three-run homer as the Arizona Diamondbacks coasted to an 8-3 victory over the Montreal Expos. The Milwaukee Brewers got home runs from Raul Casanova, Tyler Houston and Jeromy Burnitz to open their six-game road trip with a 5-3 win over the Atlanta Braves. In Miami, the Florida Marlins posted a 4-3 win over the St Louis Cardinals as Mike Lowell extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a two-run homer. Finally, in the National League, Ben Davis hit a grand slam and Phil Nevin added a three-run shot as the San Diego Padres overwhelmed the Chicago Cubs,10-3, in the opener of a three-game series at Wrigley Field. American League Mike Mussina was on form with a three-hit shutout to help the New York Yankees cruise to a 4-0 victory over the Minnesota Twins. Mussina threw just 99 pitches, including 69 strikes, and did not allow a walk while striking out 10 batters on the way to his second straight shutout against Minnesota. Mussina allowed only one batter to reach second base and seemed to get stronger as the game went on. Jason Johnson's strong pitching over five and two thirds innings and a Jerry Hairston homer helped the Baltimore Orioles to a 3-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The highlight of the Cleveland Indians' 13-2 rout of the Kansas City Royals was Marty Cordova's three-run homer in a six-run seventh inning. In Arlington, Deivi Cruz smacked a two-out, three-run homer in the top of the 10th inning as the Detroit Tigers posted a 6-3 victory over the Texas Rangers. In Tuesday's other games, the Anaheim Angels beat the Chicago White Sox 6-4, the Boston Red Sox blanked the Seattle Mariners 2-0 and the Toronto Blue Jays fought back to beat the Oakland Athletics 5-4 in 10 innings. |
