American League The Seattle Mariners marched to a record-equalling 19th win in April by overpowering the Chicago White Sox 8-3. The Mariners' tally of victories ties the April record set by the Atlanta Braves, who went on a 19-6 run in 1997. Seattle have now won eight straight games and 12 out of 13. Aaron Sele won his fourth straight decision, allowing three runs in seven innings, and Mike Cameron reached base five times and stole three bases. Carl Everett grabbed his second grand slam in four days and Manny Ramirez also homered as the Boston Red Sox wiped out the Kansas City Royals 9-2. Everett, followed his sixth career grand slam against Minnesota on Tuesday, by connecting with a 2-2 Jose Santiago pitch in the sixth inning to break open the game. Doug Mientkiewicz homered twice and drove in four runs as the Minnesota Twins dispatched the Baltimore Orioles 6-3. The New York Yankees restored some battered confidence by edging the Oakland Athletics 3-2 in a repeat of last year's Division Series. The World Series champions brought a three-game losing streak to an end thanks to Tino Martinez, whose solo homer in the sixth snapped a tie, and Orlando Hernandez, who allowed two runs over five innings. The Texas Rangers almost wasted a 9-1 lead before finally getting home 11-9 against the Cleveland Indians. Dave Mlicki produced seven strong innings to lead the Detroit Tigers to a 4-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. It was only the fourth win in 12 home games for the Tigers. Jose Cruz cracked a three-run homer to improve his hitting streak to a major league-best 19 games and Raul Mondesi scored four times as the Toronto Blue Jays crushed the Anaheim Angels 12-4. National League After a six-match winning streak the Philadelphia Phillies, suffered their second straight loss, this time to the LA Dodgers. Dave Hansen made the key play as the Phillies succumbed 4-3 to the Dodgers. Rookie Albert Pujols recorded three runs as the St Louis Cardinals made amends for last year's NL championship Series defeat by demolishing the New York Mets 9-0. The scoreline was the same in Phoenix where the Atlanta Braves handed the Arizona Diamondbacks a 9-0 drubbing. Mike Thurman pitched seven strong innings and was backed by three solo homers as the Montreal Expos handed the Milwaukee Brewers a 6-1 loss. Eric Owens' penchant for excelling at Enron Field showed no sign of abating as his 10th inning home run capped a 5-for-6 effort and led the Florida Marlins to a 9-8 victory over the Houston Astros. The Cincinnati Reds powered to their eighth consecutive win on the road by downing the Colorado Rockies 12-9. Aramis Ramirez and Brian Giles homered as the Pittsburgh Pirates breezed past the San Diego Padres 3-0. While in San Franciso, the Chicago Cubs won 7-3 to hand out a fourth straight home loss to the Giants. Pitcher Kerry Wood gave up three runs but also struck out 14 over six innings.
