Former Olympic rower Chris Baillieu has been appointed as the first chairman of British Swimming.

Baillieu, who won a silver medal at the 1976 Games in Montreal, is best known for his work commentating on the university Boat Race.

Through his connections with rowing, the four-time Cambridge Blue has worked closely with the Sports Council and is looking forward to the new challenge.

"I have a background of working with athletes and have been involved in developing and improving the management of rowing both domestically and internationally," said Baillieu.

"With considerable experience in sport but with absolutely no swimming baggage, I see this as a strength I bring to the job as chairman."

David Sparkes, chief executive of the Amateur Swimming Federation, added: "This proves swimming has come of age and is broad-minded enough to recognise the qualities of a professional from another sport.

"Chris Baillieu brings a breath of fresh air to swimming, and I look forward to working with him."
