Bowls pair slam crowd's "ignorance"

England's Les Gillett and Mark McMahon captured bowls' World Indoor Pairs title in Great Yarmouth beating Scotland's Hugh Duff and Paul Foster in a four-hour marathon.

The English pair won 6-7 7-4 7-3 3-7 7-3 but the Scottish duo were far from happy with the capacity Great Yarmouth crowd.

"I was disgusted with their behaviour - they continually cheered our bowls when they missed their target and constantly made a noise when Hugh and I were about to deliver our bowls," said Foster.

Duff was more critical, adding: "They were ignorant."

But the Scots said Gillett and McMahon deserved their success.

The number seven seeds took the £10,000 first prize and ended Foster's hope of adding the pairs title to last week's singles.

"I've absolutely no complaints with them - the boys played really well and deserve to be champions," said Foster.

"I'm really gutted for Hugh - it's the best he's played and the battle between him and Les at lead was really quality.

"I would have loved to have won it for him."
