Kalanisi takes Turf title

Kalanisi, left, charges to victory from the outside
The British were celebrating after Kalanisi again trumped Montjeu to win the Breeders' Cup Turf in Kentucky with a brilliant late run along the outside.

Trained by Sir Michael Stoute and ridden by Johnny Murtagh, the Irish-bred horse went off at 9/2 with the Stoute/Murtagh partnership gaining redemption after Petrushka had failed as favourite in the Filly and Mare Turf.

Murtagh was content to keep the colt midway down the field for most of the race before producing one of the best finishes down the famous Churchill Downs finishing stretch, condemning Quiet Resolve to second place with John's Call in third.

Montjeu finished well back in seventh place, and was beaten by Kalanisi for the second successive race following on from the Champion Stakes.

Montjeu, having his final start before being retired to stud was never able to land a blow having raced in last for the first mile of the 12-furlong contest.

Kalanisi's success was the jewel in the crown for this season's champion trainer Sir Michael Stoute, who has had a remarkable season.

He said: "He's a very tough horse, a very good horse who hasn't had the credit he has deserved in the past.

"Once he saw some daylight he really quickened."

The win was trainer Stoute's second victory in the Turf in recent years with Pilsudski winning the race at Woodbine in Canada in 1996.

Murtagh, meanwhile, has won 11 Group One races this year.

Another Newmarket-trained horse, Alec Stewart's Mutaman finished a game fourth.
