Wrestler Leipold given ban
Leipold in action at the Sydney Olympic Games
Leipold (blue) has been suspended from wrestling
Wrestler Alexander Leipold has been given a two-year ban after being ordered to hand back his Olympic gold medal for failing a drugs test.

The International Wrestling Federation (FILA) confirmed the suspension for Leipold, who was stripped of his 76kg title.

Leipold, the 1994 world champion, has denied having knowingly taken any banned substance and blamed food supplements for the positive test.

The first German to have been stripped of an Olympic medal, he still has the option of taking his case to arbitration.

He was retrospectively disqualified from the Sydney Games by the International Olympic Committee after two anabolic substances were found in urine samples.

Upset

American Brandon Slay, who took the silver, was awarded the gold medal.

Slay was visibly upset by his defeat and refused to shake either Leipold's or the referee's hand.

Leipold was Germany's first freestyle wrestling gold medallist for 40 years in the 76kg final.

Mongolian freestyle wrestler Oyunbileg Purevbaata also failed a dope test at the Olympics.

The wrestler, who finished fifth in the 58kg freestyle division, was also disqualified.

The two cases brought the total number of positive competition tests at the Games to nine.
