The judo and wrestling venue is located 13 kilometres north of the centre of Athens in the district of Ano Liossia.
Designed by architects Molfesis and Genias, it proved one of the Games' more straightforward construction projects.
Works commenced in October 2001 and were completed in January 2004 at a cost of about £56m.
The arena was inaugurated on 16 January during the Athens International Judo Open.
Among the facilities on site are warm-up areas, athletes' rest rooms, training areas, medical areas and national federation offices.
The venue will also host judo, along with boccia, during the Paralympics.
