The shot put will be one of the highlights of the Olympics as it takes place at the site of the ancient Games in Olympia, 320km southwest of Athens.
Athletes will make their way to the stadium past the 600 BC Temple of Hera and the altar of Zeus where the Olympic torch is lit.
The arena itself dates back to the fourth century BC.
To preserve the historic atmosphere, organisers will ensure there is "no visual intervention to the ground".
This means spectators will be limited to 15,000 and seated on the grassy slopes overlooking the arena, as there will be no temporary structures such as grandstands.
In addition, competition will be during the day to rule out the need for electronic boards and artificial lighting, and only temporary throwing circles will be placed in the arena.
Athletes, coaches and accompanying team officials will be accommodated in the nearby International Olympic Academy.
