Russia and USA advance
Elena Baranova defends against Japan's Mutsuko Nagata
Russia progressed to the quarter-finals of the women's basketball competition with a 94-71 win over Japan.

Elena Baranova scored 22 points and Ilona Korstin added 20 as Russia joined Australia in advancing from Group A.

In Group B, the USA beat Spain 71-58 for their fourth straight win while New Zealand downed China 79-77.

The Americans had won their first three games by an average of 31 points but were made to work hard by the previously unbeaten Spaniards.

The USA fought through foul problems and poor shooting to clinch first place in their group.

Victory wasn't decided until inside players Lisa Leslie, Tina Thompson and Yolanda Griffith led a 10-2 fourth-quarter run that put the Americans firmly in control.

Leslie led the scoring with 19 points, while Amaya Valdemoro finished with 22 points for Spain.

In their match, Russia dominated their much smaller opponents from the start and finished with a 57-22 rebound advantage.

Noriko Hamaguchi still managed 14 points for Japan, who can still qualify for the quarter-finals with a victory over Greece on Sunday.

Earlier, Zhang Fan's three-pointer with 6.4 seconds left pushed China into a 77-77 tie with New Zealand.

But Megan Compain dribbled from free throw line to free throw line to hit the game-winner with 0.4 seconds remaining.

Even a loss in their final group game against the Czech Republic on Sunday could see New Zealand advance.
