Great Britain's Kelly Holmes kept her hopes of a historic golden Olympic double alive as she qualified in style for Saturday's 1500m final.
Holmes came through powerfully down the last 50 metres to secure her place.
Holmes said: "I had a tough heat so I had to concentrate. I have to pretend I didn't win 800m gold so that I can concentrate on the 1500m."
But Hayley Tullett, world bronze medallist a year ago, failed to make the final after finishing 11th.
Holmes clocked 4 minutes 4.77 seconds as she finished second in her semi-final behind Russia's Natalya Yevdokimova.
"When you're in the final, you have to respect every athlete," she said.
"My coach and I will go through the tapes and see who looks strong and decide our tactics from there.
"What I've done, I've done for myself - but I'm very grateful for all the support.
"It's hard at the moment to stay focused."
Romania's Maria Cioncan brought home the field home in the first semi-final in 4mins 6.69secs, with Russia's Tatyana Tomashova and Turkey's Elvan Abeylegesse also safely through.
