Oyepitan into semi-finals
Britain's Ade Oyepitan in action
Britain's Abi Oyepitan delivered a strong finish to ease into Tuesday's semi-finals of the women's 200m.

The 24-year-old surged off the bend to finish a close second to American Allyson Felix in 22.69 seconds.

"I really want to get into the final and I think I can. I just need to run a little faster and I'll be fine," Oyepitan told BBC Sport.

British 100m champion Joice Maduaka got a poor start and does not advance after finishing fifth in heat four in 23.30.

Oyepitan has come to Athens in good form, setting a new personal best of 22.50 in the first round, and she believes there is more to come.

"I've been working on my bend," said the London-born athlete.

"The race was OK but I didn't get out as quick as I could have."

American 18-year-old sensation Felix came home first in 22.69 seconds while Ukraine's Maryna Maydanova was third.

Title favourite Jamaica's Veronica Campbell proved her medal credentials as she comfortably advanced in 22.50.

The Olympic 100m bronze medallist won a competitive first heat ahead of Debbie Ferguson of the Bahamas and Belgian Kim Gevaert.

Earlier, Campbell controversially came through the first round when she ran into another lane on the bend.

But officials ruled that, as the lane was empty and she did not interfere with anybody else, the result could stand.

American Muna Lee took control of the second heat to reach the semis, winning in 22.75 seconds ahead of Jamaican contender Aleen Bailey.

France's European champion Muriel Hurtis failed to progress as she came home in sixth spot.

Cydonie Camille Mothersill from the Cayman Islands won the final heat in 22.77.

Veteran former Jamaican athlete Merlene Ottey also sneaked into the semis, qualifing in 23.07.
