Irish athlete Jamie Costin is expected to fly home by air ambulance on Wednesday after being injured in a road accident near Athens on Tuesday.
The 27-year-old, who was entered in the 50 Kilometre walk, was involved in a
head-on collision with a lorry.
He sustained a compression fracture of his back and a broken toe and while he will be able to walk again, his athletics career in in doubt.
"Hopefully we will fly him home on Wednesday," said an Irish official.
An initial inquiry into the accident is being conducted by Greek police.
Witnesses at the accident scene said that Costin was lucky to be alive after the crash.
Costin's accident completed a bad day for the Irish athletics team with 20 Kilometre walker Gillian O'Sullivan pulling out of the Games through injury and discus thrower Nick Sweeney also a huge doubt for his competition.
World Championship silver medallist O'Sullivan withdrew after failing to shake off hip and knee injuries.
Sweeney tore knee ligaments while training on Monday evening.
