Aussies grab last gasp gold
![]() Australia celebrate a remarkable victory
Australia's women grabbed water polo gold in a thrilling final against United States.
With just 1.13 seconds on the clock Yvette Higgins smashed an unstoppable shot to give the home side a 4-3 win. The US had levelled the scores 3-3 with 13 seconds left when Brenda Villa scored her second goal of the match and the game to destined to go into extra time - but then Higgins struck to send the crowd into raptures. Villa had given the Americans the lead in the first quarter but the Australians hit back a minute later through Melissa Mills. Ericka Lorenz put the US back in the lead in the second quarter but yet again the home side found a reply through Bronwyn Mayer and then the Australians took the lead when Naomi Castle struck - and then came the dramatic finale. Russia took the bronze medals when they beat the Netherlands, 4-3, in the match for third place. In the men's competition Russia beat Australia 6-4 in Group A while Spain beat Kazakhstan, 8-7, and Italy beat Slovakia, 11-8. In Group B, Croatia beat United States, 10-7, Yugoslavia thrashed the Netherlands ,9-1, and Hungary beat Greece, 7-4. |
