De Bruijn soars to butterfly gold
Inge de Bruijn
De Bruijn was in a class of her own
Dutch swimming sensation Inge de Bruijn broke her own world record on the way to picking up the Olympic 100 metres butterfly title.

The 27-year-old was in fantastic form as she cruised to a time of 56.61 seconds to lower her previous best by 0.03 seconds she set in Federal Way in Washington last July.

De Bruijn broke seven world records this year which saw her also lower the 100m butterfly time on two occasions prior to the Games.

Martina Moravcova of Slovakia took the silver in 57.97 and American Dara Torres the bronze in 58.20.

"It was really, really important for me to get the medal," said De Bruijn.

Compatriot

"There are so many good swimmers but I put the black curtains up either side of me.

"I was relaxed and confident. I had nothing to lose."

Brooke Bennett of the United States won the Olympic women's 400m freestyle swimming gold medal in a time of 4 minutes 5.80 seconds.

Compatriot Diana Munz won the silver and the bronze to Costa Rica's Claudia Poll.

Elsewhere Britain suffred a blow when, Portsmouth's Katy Sexton bowed out in the 100m backstroke at the semi-final stage.
