Woodies stunned by Canadians
Woodforde and Woodbridge in action
Woodforde and Woodbridge had been hot favourites
Canadian pair Daniel Nestor and Sebastien Lareau clinched the men's doubles tennis gold with a shock defeat of the the Australian duo of Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde.

The Australian defending champions, who have dominated doubles tennis for the past decade, were playing one of their last major events together and had been expected to go out in golden glory.

However, Nestor and Lareau won 5-7 6-3 6-4 7-6 (7-2) in 2 hours 46 minutes, stunning a sell-out crowd that had expected a home victory.

The match ended when Woodbridge served two successive double faults to hand victory to the Canadians.

Second gold

The Australian pair, affectionately known as the Woodies, have won everything there is to win in the doubles game: 11 Grand Slam titles, the Davis Cup and Olympic gold in Atlanta four years ago.

The gold was Canada's second of the Games. Quebecois Lareau has previously won the US Open and French Open titles with American Alex O'Brien.

Nestor has been a Wimbledon and US Open doubles finalis with Mark Knowles. He previously broke Australian hearts in the Games with his defeat of Patrick Rafter in the singles competition.

The bronze medal went to Spanish pair Alex Corretja and Albert Costa, who beat fifth-seeded South African combination David Adams and John-Laffnie de Jager 2-6 6-4 6-3.
