Russia take team epee gold
Russia's fencers took gold in the women's team epee event on Tuesday on a day of fencing upsets.
The Russians defeated Switzerland 45-35 in the final after removing top seeds Hungary in the semi-final.
And the Hungarians didn't even have the consolation of taking the bronze medal as China, who dumped defending champions France out of the tournament in the first round, fought back to win 41-39.
The Russian team of Tatiana Logounova, Oxana Ermakova and Maria Mazina were never headed in the final, although the Swiss put up strong resistance.
Sophie Lamon, 15, the youngest fencer at the Olympics, was particularly impressive, but as a team, Lamon, Gianna Habluetzel-Buerki and Diana Romagnoli, could not scale the heights they had reached against the Chinese in their semi-final.
Logounova was delighted to put the disappointment of defeat in the individual epee semi-final behind her.
"I had big problems in the individual event and I wanted us to win a medal today," said Logounova, who lost to Habluetzel-Buerki in the individual semi-final on Sunday. "Today fate turned its face towards me."
Russia's success was sealed by Mazina as she fought off Lamon in the eighth of the nine bouts which make up a match.
