Shock exit for Randall
![]() Graeme Randall: Unexpected end to gold hopes
World light middleweight champion Graeme Randall suffered a shock early exit in his bid to earn Britain's first Olympic judo gold medal.
The 25-year-old Scotsman was floored twice with almost perfect throws by Iran's unfancied Kazem Sarikhani for a knockout finish in the second round of the under 81kg. Randall, who became world champion in 1999, will fight for one of the two light middleweight bronze medals later through the repechage consolation round. On a day of shocks, Uzbekistan's Farkhod Turaev, who lost to Randall in the 1999 world championship final, was also knocked out by Uruguay's Alvaro Paseyro in the first round. In the women's under-63kg light middleweight contest, world champion Keiko Maeda of Japan was outpointed by unfancied American Celia Schutz in her first match.
