Johnson fires to first gold
Nancy Johnson
Johnson won the first gold medal of the Games
Nancy Johnson of the United States became the first gold medal winner of the Sydney Games by winning the women's 10m air rifle.

The 26-year-old came from behind to win with a score of 497.7.

South Korea's Kang Cho-Hyun, who qualified for the final in first place, failed to hold on to her position and finished in silver spot with a score of 495.7.

China's Gao Sing achived a total of 497.5 to take the bronze.

"That was my goal and I achieved my goal," said Johnson. "Unbelievable. I knew I had a medal, but I didn't know it was going to be gold."

Very grim

Johnson said she had struggled through the preliminary rounds but came good in the finals after consulting with her coach.

"I got off the line, I talked to my husband and coach," she said. "They told me what I was doing wrong. I was swaying."

World champion Sonja Pfeilschifter of Germany finished fifth with 495.9.

"She went out with a very grim look on her face," Johnson said of Pfeilschifter. "And I went out with a smile, determined to do my best."

France's Franck Dumoulin won the men's 10m pistol shooting title, edging China's Wang Yifu into silver. Igor Basinsky of Belarus took the bronze. Contention

In the men's trap, Briton Ian Peel fired his way into medal contention by collecting 70 points in the opening three rounds.

That put hime in third place, with four-time British Olympic champion Peter Boden, who turns 53 in two days, in joint 27th place on 63 points.

The top six ranked players after tomorrow's two final rounds will shoot in the final.
