Aussie wins first Tae-Kwon-Do gold
![]() Lauren Burns won the first women's Tae-Kwon-Do gold
Australia's Lauren Burns, made it an auspicious Olympic debut for Tae-Kwon-Do, when she won
the first women's gold medal by beating Cuba's Urbia Melendez Rodriguez in the flyweight final.
The 26-year-old Burns, in her home country, surged to a 4-2 lead in the second round of the under-49kg division and kept the lead to the end. And Michail Mouroutsos beat Spain's Gabriel Esparzato to win the first men's gold with a points victory in the 58kg final. The 20-year-old Greek, who won the Balkan title in 1998, landed three point-scoring kicks in the final round to beat Esparza 4-2. Taiwan's Huang Chih-Hsiung, the 1997 world bantamweight champion, beat Gabriel Alberto Taraburelli of Argentina 3-0 to win the bronze medal. Both finals enjoyed royal support with Spain's Queen Sofia and Greece's Prince Nikolas in attendance, along with former US secretary of state Henry Kissinger and International Olympic Committee president Juan Antonio Samaranch. |
