Spain stunned by Argentina
![]() Argentina were just too strong for the Spanish
Spain, who claimed silver in the men's hockey in the last Olympics in Atlanta, suffered a fall from grace on Monday, as Argentina consigned them to last place in their group.
After beating Pakistan in the final of the qualifying tournament in Japan in March, Spain had their sights set on a first Olympic title. But their 5-1 hammering by the Argentinians leaves them still searching for their first win in Sydney. Argentine striker Jorge Lombi took his tournament tally to 10 goals with a superb hat-trick to destroy the Spanish. For Argentina, who came into the tournament as replacements for South Africa, the win was a just reward for an industrious week's work - and they celebrated in vocal fashion. After a dismal start against India, they held Korea and Poland to draws and pushed Australia all the way before succumbing 2-1. "To finish in the first eight at the Olympics would be like a bronze medal for us," said Argentine coach Jorge Ruiz. "To get the chance to play in the Champions Trophy is a dream for us. "That is why we celebrated today, because this win was so important."
