Britain give it away
Kath Johnson and Seong-Eun Kim
Kath Johnson of Great Britain battles with Seong-Eun Kim
Former Olympic hockey champion and BBC Sport's Sean Kerly watches both British teams fail to get a win and reckons the men have almost certainly blown their final chance.

The men started really well and it was everything that we needed to happen.

After the dismal performance again Pakistan, they needed to get out and prove that they weren't as bad as they looked in that defeat. It was their last chance to stay in the tournament.

To start the way we did and get a 2-0 lead before half-time gave us all a great deal of heart and something positive to cheer about.

In fact, they came out for the second half and carried on where they left off. Perhaps a crucial moment came when Jimmy Wallace had a one-on-one with the Malaysian goalkeeper but he didn't look like he knew what he wanted to do and just hit straight at the man..

From then on they backed off the Malaysians and allowed them to run at them. This was just what they wanted because with their skills they started to make inroads into the British defence.

Very nervous

they looked very vulnerable and inexperienced and ill equipped to cope with the pressure of a big tournament like this
  Sean Kerly

We were just defending and giving the ball away and it made it very difficult. As soon as the score got back to 2-1, we started to look very nervous and couldn't retain possession. What they would do is just clear the ball, rush down the other end, lose it and it just looked like they had lost their nerve.

It seemed the pressure was too much to bear and at the end of the day, they looked very vulnerable and inexperienced and ill equipped to cope with the pressure of a big tournament like this.

It was a disappointing result, particularly because we started so promisingly and did almost half the job they wanted to do.

Clinical

But I have to say that in the three games so far, the team have played to their potential for one half against Malaysia and one half against Holland and the rest of the time there have been major problems in defence and also in converting our opportunities. We are just not clinical enough in attack.

I was expecting more from the women - before the tournament they had beaten most of the sides that they were scheduled to face here.

I was expecting them to be serious medal contenders. If the results go for them, they can still qualify for the medal pool which is the next round of games which is amazing really.

Expectation

But both teams have the found occasion overwhelming and the expectation has not helped either. Nowadays there is so much pressure because they are fighting for their world positions as well as their level of lottery funding.

I'm not sure what other reasons there may be for our under-achievement - it's pretty hot, hotter than it normally is at this time of the year, but they will have prepared and they will be as fit as anyone here. But the bottom line is that neither team have taken advantage of the chances they've created.
